Walking the Milford
Track in New Zealand

One of the most famous
walks offered on the
South Island of New
Zealand is The Milford
Track.
Traversing the heart of
New Zealand's wild fiord
country, the Milford
Track has long been
described as "the finest
walk in the world".
Since Quintin Mackinnon
pioneered the route in
1888, everyone from
hardened trekkers to
novices sporting their
first pair of boots have
taken up the challenge
of the Milford Track.
The Fiordland National
Park is the cornerstone
of the Te Wahipounamu
Southwest New Zealand
World Heritage Area.
Walkers on the track to
Milford Sound enjoy
close encounters with
the native birdlife: the
Robin; Kea; Weka;
Fantail; Parakeet;
Bellbird; even Kiwi have
been spotted! They also
experience Fiordland at
its most spectacular:
deep lakes; silent
fiords; luxuriant forest
and sheer canyons carved
out of imposing
granite define this
landscape. On fine days
there is a postcard shot
around every corner but
only when it rains and
torrents of water
cascade down the
mountainsides have you
truly experienced the
magic of the Milford
Track.

all-inclusive guided

lodges and you will be

If you would like more
of an
independent
walking experience, you
can pre-book a package
where all necessary
transport, hut bookings,
track briefing and

taken care of.
There are also day
walks available,
which have been designed
for people with limited
time, or those who would
rather walk for just a
single day. These are
an informative and easy
way to sample the magic
of the New Zealand
wilderness. As you walk
your guide will share
their knowledge of the
unique flora, fauna,
history and geography of

maximum enjoyment from
your day everyone is
encouraged to walk at
their own pace.

5 day / 4 night Milford Track
Walk Sample Itinerary:
Day 1 - Queenstown or Te Anau to
Glade House
(1.6km): You can start in
Queenstown or Te Anau. If
staying in Queenstown, you will
be taken from your hotel to Te
Anau to join those from Te Anau
for lunch. You then travel to Te
Anau Downs for the launch cruise
to the head of Lake Te Anau, the
beginning of the Milford Track
and a short walk to Glade House,
the first lodge, for a hot
shower and a meal.
Day 2 - Glade House to Pomplona
Lodge
(16km): Wake to the dawn chorus
of native birds. Set out across
the Clinton River walking
through beech forest to Hirere
Falls for lunch. Spectacular
views at Clinton Canyon. A rocky
climb to Marlene's Creek
signalling your arrival at
Pomplona Lodge.
Day 3 - Pomplona Lodge to
Quintin Lodge
(15km): Continue up the Clinton
River with the 230m high St
Quintin Falls visible on the
side of the canyon. The track is
getting steeper as you zig zag
up the MacKinnon Pass, resting
wherever you wish to enjoy the
impressive views. Lunch at the
Pass Hut and then head down
around the base of Mt Balloon,
under the sheer face of Jervois
Glacier, across Roaring Burn and
Morraine Creek and through the
rainforest to Quintin Lodge for
afternoon tea. Then take a 90
minute round trip to Sutherland
Falls, the world's 5th highest
waterfall.
Day 4 - Quintin Lodge to Milford
Sound
(21km): An easy days walking
down a long steep hill named
Gentle Annie. A "cuppa" at the
Boatshed - real bush brewed tea.
Bell Rock intriguingly hollowed,
and the Mackay Falls. Lunch
beside the cooling mist of
Giant's Gate waterfall and then
a final walk alongside tranquil
Lake Ada to Sandfly Point
followed by a short boat trip to
Mitre Peak Lodge for the evening
celebrations.
Day 5 - Milford Sound to Te Anau
or Queenstown:
Sit back and relax this morning
on a Red Boats cruise, past Lady
Bowen Falls, beneath towering
Mitre Peak which rises sheer
from the sea to the hidden mouth
of Milford Sound. Journey past
an old sealer's anchorage at
Harrison's Cove, beneath
Pembroke Glacier, and visit the
Underwater Observatory. Watch
for dolphins, penguins and fur
seals. Discover the world's only
"whiskey falls". Following the
cruise, there's a scenic coach
ride back to Te Anau and then
Queenstown through the homer
Tunnel and mountain wilderness,
arriving in Te Anau at
approximately 12 noon and
continuing on to Queenstown at
3.30pm.

walk the Milford
Track each year
making it one of
the most popular
walks in New
Zealand.
Only 40 people
per day are
allowed on the
track (bookings
need to be done
well in
advance).
The walk is 54
kilometers long.
The region gets
lots of rain.
Camping is not
permitted on the
Milford Track.
Milford Track
season is from
late October to
mid April.
Milford Track
can be tramped
during the
winter months if
you can arrange
launch
transport.
However, the
Milford Track
winter option is
strictly for
trampers and
mountaineers
once the snow
arrives.
MacKinnon Pass
can require
ice-axes and
crampons in
winter, and
anyone
inexperienced or
ill-equipped
should not
attempt it.

Traditional New Zealand
Tamarillo Chutney
Tamarillo’s: Once a "lost
food of the Incas", this
exciting fruit has been
developed, re-named and
commercialised in New
Zealand, to add a new food
ingredient to the world’s
table.

INGREDIENTS:
2½ kg tamarillos
3 medium onions
3 apples, peeled and chopped
3 cloves garlic, crushed
2 tablespoons grated root ginger
1 tablespoon whole cloves
1 teaspoon peppercorns
1 teaspoon chilli powder,
1 teaspoon salt
4 cups sugar
4 cups white vinegar

METHOD:
Discard the stems and place tamarillos in a bowl.
Cover with boiling water and stand for 3-4
minutes.
Drain and cover in cold water.
When cool enough to handle, peel the
tamarillos and slice into a saucepan.
Add the onions, apples, garlic and root
ginger.
Add the cloves and peppercorns and stir in the chilli
powder, salt, sugar and vinegar.
Bring to the boil, stirring until the sugar
is dissolved.
Reduce the heat and simmer for about 1½
hours, until thick like jam.
Pack into hot clean jars. Seal when cold.
Makes about 8 cups.
