Polar
Bears of Churchill
Due to its harsh
climate, Canada’s
subarctic remains
relatively untouched.
Northern animals can be
seen in this mixed
environment of tundra,
boreal forest, and pack
ice. Polar bears,
beluga whales, caribou,
harp seals, arctic
foxes, and ptarmigan are
only a few of the
species that inhabit
these natural
surroundings. Anideal
location for seeing some
of the subarctic and its
sights is Churchill,
Manitoba. Churchill is a
small seaport located on
the western shore of
Hudson Bay - over 1000
km northeast of
Manitoba’s capital city
of Winnipeg and is only
accessible by rail and
air. Churchill is the
undisputed "Polar Bear
Capital of the World"!
Every autumn, the
tundra surrounding
Churchill becomes a
stopover for more than
one thousand bears on
their annual migration
to hunt for food on the
frozen ice of the Hudson
Bay. Large numbers of
these usually solitary
bears can be found here
at this time of year.
Here in Churchill, you
can experience one of
the world’s greatest
wildlife adventures!
Plan to travel to
Churchill during October
or November when the
bears are slowly
congregating along the
coast, anticipating the
winter freeze-up of
Hudson Bay. Far
from being cuddly
creatures, Polar Bears
are the world’s largest
carnivore, adept at
stalking and killing
seals on pack ice.
These magnificent
looking animals weigh up
to 500 kg and stand up
to an incredible 3
metres tall! When
the Bay freezes, the
polar bears can get onto
the ice to hunt their
favourite meal, ringed
seal.
As well, polar bears have been known to kill and eat
walruses and beluga
whales. While the bears
pose a real danger to
Churchill’s population,
the town has a hotline
where bear sightings are
reported and a bear jail
where rogue bears are
kept until they can be
relocated.

To view the bears
safely, special polar
bear single and
multiple-day tours
depart Churchill for the
tundra in
custom-designed vehicles
with a covered cab and
large, under-inflated
tires. The tires help to
minimize the disturbance
of the tundra while
placing visitors at a
safe height above the
bears.
Travelling
on one of these “Tundra
Buggies” is the most
comfortable and safest
ways to experience a
polar bear tour in the
bears' natural
environment. These
specially designed all-terrain vehicles allow you to
watch and photograph the
polar bears at close
quarters and in safety.
The buggies are heated,
have washrooms, and
opening windows. They
guarantee an exceptional
view of wildlife in
northern Manitoba –
unlike anything you'll
find elsewhere.
Another highlight of
travelling to Churchill,
is the opportunity to
view the Northern
Lights. As high-energy
particles from the sun
come into contact with
the gases in Earth’s
upper atmosphere, the
Northern Lights (Aurora
Borealis) are created.
The lights glow and
ripple in various
colours, depending on
the type of gas that the
particles excite. For
approximately 300 days
of the year, the
Northern Lights are
visible. Churchill,
directly under the
umbrella of the Aurora
oval, has a clear view
of the Northern Lights
for many of these days.
Prime Northern Lights
viewing times are
normally September to
October & January to
May.

Tours from one to seven days,
suiting naturalists and
adventurists alike, are
plentiful in Churchill as access
to the natural northern wonders
is easy. Due to limited
accommodation within and
transportation to Churchill, as
well as the short and popular
touring seasons, it is
recommended that tours,
transport, and accommodation be
booked months or more in
advance.

current warming
trends continue,
two-thirds of
the polar bear
population could
disappear by
2050. Others
predict that the
polar bear
species may
become extinct
within 100
years.

Maple Pecan Pie
Pecan pie is a decadent
dessert on its own, but this
buttery sweet dish is made
even richer drizzled with
fragrant vanilla and sticky
maple syrup for a tasty
twist on this traditional
Thanksgiving pie – all the
way from Canada!

INGREDIENTS:
1 cup maple syrup
2/3 cup sugar
3 eggs
1/4 cup melted butter
1 tsp. vanilla
1 cup coarsely chopped pecans
23cm purchased or homemade pie
shell, unbaked
|

METHOD:
Preheat oven to 180
degrees C.
In a mixing bowl, beat
together maple syrup, sugar,
eggs, melted butter and
vanilla with an electric
mixer until slightly
thickened, about 2 or 3
minutes.
Stir in chopped pecans and
pour the mixture into the
prepared pie shell. Bake for
55 to 60 minutes or until a
knife poked into the center
of the filling comes out
clean.
Let cool completely or serve
slightly warm with whipped
cream or ice cream.
